Alan Ladd and Carolyn Jones Portray Unhappy Marriage

John Hamilton (Alan Ladd) has left the advertising business tin New York to pursue a career as a painter. The Hamiltons have moved from Manhattan to In a New England countryside in Stoneville, Connecticut. Linda Hamilton (Carolyn Jones) is an unhappy alcoholic bored with life in the country who longs to return to the excitement of New York. When John is offered an opportunity in New York paying $30,000 a year, a hefty sum in 1959, Linda begs him to take the job but he refuses.

Carolyn Jones as the alcoholic wife, Linda, offers a brittle portrait of a woman who is nearly impossible to live with. The beginning of the movie does a good job of painting the nearly impossible situation lived in by spouses of alcoholics .

Linda appears at a neighborhood party with a black eye and admits she is loaded. Even so, the neighbors do not believe she has a problem because John has kept her drinking a secret. She claims that John gave her the black eye, which is untrue.

Linda Disapears and the Townspeople React

When John travels to New York for an overnight trip to turn down the job offer, Linda disappears, leaving the house in shambles and John's paintings slashed. John appears shocked when his wife disappears, but does not have time to grieve her loss before the townspeople jump to conclusions.

The townspeople turn on John, as the obvious suspect, even before Linda's body is discovered. While the townspeople have a lynch mob mentality, the town's children, whom he has befriended, take John in and protect him in a secret cave.

The children of the town act heroically, living in a type of innocent, unseen sub world that the adults do not observe. The children offer lighthearted humor to the story as they set about the task of proving John's innocence.

Alan Ladd as John keeps a cool head through it all, as he figures out how to find the evidence to prove his innocence with the help of the children.
